Today I am talking all about closet organization! I’m sharing some pictures of my closet and I’m listing four simple ways to help you make your closet space more efficient, no matter how small it is!
I’m super into my closet and I’m all for finding new ways to organize my clothing. I’m also all about saving time and making it easier to find what I want to wear quickly! Over the years, I’ve found a few methods that have helped and have also made my closet space more visually appealing! I have outlined four of them below:
1. Categorize
One of the best and easiest ways to organize your closet is to separate your clothing into different categories. This makes putting together an outfit so much easier and it also helps to see what you have an abundance of (in my case, it’s grey t-shirts) and what you are in need of (I could use some high-rise flare jeans!). Some of the categories that I use are:
- T-Shirts*
- Long Sleeve Shirts
- Pants & Jeans
- Button Down Shirts
- Dresses & Tunics
- Blazers & Hung Sweatshirts
- Sweaters
- Skirts
- Folded Sweatshirts & T-Shirts
*Some t-shirts I hang so that they aren’t wrinkled, and then others that I just wear around the house I keep folded in piles.
2. Use ROY G BIV
Once I have finished categorizing my clothing, it’s time to color code!
Most people are probably familiar with ROY G. BIV, which is the initialism for the colors of the rainbow. I use this method to simply organize each category of clothing. Categorizing and then color coding makes it a snap to find any article of clothing in your closet! (No more of “Where is my red long sleeve shirt?!”) I also find that color organizing makes your closet much more visually appealing. I worked at Old Navy for years and this was the method that we were told to use when cleaning and reorganizing the clearance section and I loved it! I thought it worked awesome and immediately started incorporating it into my own life. It gets a little tricky with stripes and prints, but I try my best to put them with similar base colors. For example, I usually put leopard print items in with brown colors.
3. Seasonal Switcheroo
I think most people switch out their clothing seasonally because they don’t have enough closet space, but I think it should be done even if you happen to be lucky enough to have a massive closet. My closet is decent size and I could maybe fit all of my clothing inside of it, but I choose not to because 1. it would probably make my closet really stuffed and 2. I think it’s practical to only view clothing that you are going to wear for the current season.
So twice a year I do full closet switch of my clothing. Very recently I finished my spring switch, where I pulled out and sorted through all of my fall and winter clothing that was in my closet and packed away what I wanted to keep and donated what I didn’t want. Then I pulled out all of my spring and summer clothing and put it into my closet. At the end of the summer, I will redo this whole process, putting away my spring & summer clothing and taking out my fall and winter clothing to hang.
This process really forces me to look through every item of clothing and decide if I should part with it or keep it (does it still fit, is it still stylish, is it just too old and ragged, etc.) I donate bags of clothing each time I do this and try to just put away the clothing that I think I will want to wear once I do the next clothing switch.
4. Huggable Hangers
One night a few years ago, I turned on the TV and the Home Shopping Network happened to be on. I don’t know why, but I left it on that channel and was immediately sucked into the sales special of the night which was Huggable Hangers by Joy Mangano. These hangers really seemed like something that I needed! They saved so much space and just looked so much nicer than my regular, janky plastic hangers. I purchased two packages of them that night and over the next year or so kept buying more until every item of clothing in my whole closet was hung on a huggable hanger.
I really cannot say enough good things about them! They really do save you a lot of closet space. Plus, your clothing will not slip off of the velvet material that they are made of and they are available in tons of colors. I’ve stuck with a basic linen color, but there are a lot of fun, bright ones that you can choose! I highly recommend these hangers as a space saver. You will not only have more room in your closet, but by showing a consistent hanger color, your clothing looks more visually appealing. They are a little pricey, but a worthwhile investment!
